Middleton Lodge is stunning, Emma & Jack chose their venue well. It’s a north east wedding photographers dream to shoot at, a beautiful interior surrounded by lovely gardens so we were spoiled for location choice! Here’s a selection of images showing you a taste of my take on the day.

We’ve all worked with Sophie before, she’s fab. Sophie is a stunner, and on top of that she’s really fun to work with, always smiling, always giggling (sometimes when you dont want her to..) but an all round great gal. This was the fourth Shoot Club Challenge of 2012 and I’m sure it wont be the last. Shoot Club is fab, it’s really cool that although we’re all north east wedding photographers working the same patch, we’ve become good pals, and we’re genuinely in it to help one another. Getting to shoot stuff in between paid commissions that is technically challenging is invaluable to us. Train hard and fight easy as they say. So, after setting the scene next to a huge window bathed in natural light, we went to work. Here’s my take on Sophie on what was another fun day.

I set off to Laura’s parent’s house in the morning to catch the girls getting ready and met with her parent’s, her brother and the bridesmaids. In true bride fashion Laura was running late from the hairdressers but we soon caught up with the getting ready shots before it was time for me to meet Ant and his best man at the church. I have to mention here that Ant turned up in a massive shiny new tractor, complete with ribbons. A big shout out to Ant’s dad who I believe woke at 4.30am to dress the tractor, respect!

After a beautiful church ceremony held by a very kind Reverend Andrew France, we headed off to rural Northumberland for the reception. We stopped at the roadside en route for a spot of woodland wedding photography before arriving at the farm. The weather held out all day although it threatened to rain at times. We did some family shots set amongst the daffodils, and Heather , for the record I didn’t squash a single daffodil…

I love capturing the speeches and these were no different. Laura’s dad had everyone in stitches and Ant being a fairly reserved character performed admirably. The best man successfully managed to get Ant cringing with his head in his hands, job done! Then it was on to the first dance, followed by the party. I love staying on to catch the party, sometimes they’re fairly quiet affairs but if its rocking then I’m snapping, and this party was rocking…

Ian’s job sees him all over the world and some of his guests had travelled a long distance especially to be there but I dont think they were disappointed with such a stunning location. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been a Doxford Hall wedding photogapher last year as well and I love the venue. The day kicked off around 10am and I pretty much covered everything from the bridal preparations right through until after the first dance. My clients are happy for me to mix it up on the dancefloor after the official first dance to capture some mystery dance moves, a very entertaining experience to say the least!

I met Laura & Ant recently to finalise their wedding timings and details. Once we were done we didn’t have far to travel our pre wedding photoshoot location as it was literally on their back door. Ant’s a farmer and so a Northumberland farm photoshoot was definitely on the cards. You’ll notice from the pre wedding photos that they have a gorgeous little boy, meet Max, he’s just turned one about a week after these photos and credit to him he was such a natural in front of my camera. For my clients the e session is all about having fun and being relaxed in front of camera prior to your wedding day. We try a few shots using different set ups and basically get to know each other. Being photographed doesn’t have to be a daunting experience!

I strongly recommend to all my client’s to have their e session as it makes a massive different to their confidence on the wedding day. Here’s a few from the session.

This week’s model was the bang tidy Lucy (you had to be there to get the bang tidy joke). In all seriousness as you’ll see from the images she’s stunning, check out those big brown eyes. She’s such a professional girl and we’re already looking forward to working with her again. This week’s location was Newcastle’s Quayside, around the area of The Baltic Mill, an awesome setting for what was our most technically challenging shoot of the year. Mixing flash and ambient light can be tricky at night working with slow shutter speeds and the odd ghost! Being wedding photographers in Newcastle our wedding season is just about starting now so these training days are really pushing us to the max, train hard fight easy as they say. A big shout out to the crew at nd-make up, Nick, Dan & Marie are all round top people and always deliver stunning make up for each and every shoot.

Following on from the success of our “Flash in the city” photo shoot with the beautiful Sophie, professional photographers Karen McGowran, David West and myself decided to set ourselves a new challenge for this fashion style shoot!

Using no flash, one prime lens and just available light meant we had to search for light of our own. It was a bright sunny day which as wedding photographers we know only too well how that can pose problems with harsh shadows and squinting eyes. So off we marched, along with our stunning girl for the day, Tammy. Just a bit of background on Tammy, she’s a former professional ice skater, a current graphic designer and is related to the one and only Audrey Hepburn!! You’ll see it for yourself in the images below, stunner…

My lens of choice for the day was the Canon 35mm f/1.4 L, a lens I use for all of my wedding photography work for lots of different reasons. It’s low light ability, edge to edge sharpness, distortion control and the way it reproduces colours really sets this lens apart. Being so wide it can prove challenging for close up portraiture but at the same time it produces a quirkiness in my images which I rather like.

As usual, a good day was had by all, Karen and Dave are a hoot to work with, very funny and skillful and all round great people. Tammy, I’ve worked with before on some workshops I do for Going Digital North East, is always a dream to work with so a big thanks to her xx Here’s a handful of my images taken on the day.

 The image below is my personal favourite, don’t ask me why, don’t know myself yet.

 You can see we introduced a reflector to bounce available light where we wanted it.

 Shooting portrait photography in Newcastle is just endless fun with all it’s colour!

 You guessed it, this is right outside the Centre For Life in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

 Tammy’s hair took on the shape of the structure thanks to a lucky gust of wind here!

 Sun flare in portraits can really add a new dimension.

 You wouldn’t believe I didn’t use flash here but I didn’t, I promise!

 Being able to shoot at F/1.4 really helps to isolate the detail in Tammy’s eye lashes.

So, after a little bit of research I opted for the Fuji X100, a compact camera in size with the bonus of having a dslr size sensor (plus a few other golden nuggets which I’ll save for another post perhaps?) This little camera blows my mind. It’s light, unobtrusive, it’s got a lovely retro feel to it and more importantly, the colour files it produces are simply beautiful. This little thing hangs around my neck all day long and I hardly feel it’s there.  Now I’m no techie, so don’t ask me the far end of a fart about why it works, but it just does…

Here’s an example of why it works for me. Last Sunday Em and I took the girls for a winter walk at Gibside, a National Trust site we’ve been coming to since we joined back in May last year. On our way back from a new loop we walked the sun was backlighting the trees and everything just looked wonderful. It was a very cold and frosty day but the scene in front of me prompted me to raise the camera which was hanging around my neck up to my eye, with Eva in her pushchair in front of me it took me a matter of seconds to adjust exposure compensation and take this shot.  Possibly the best image I’ve taken on this little camera so far….
